Elechi Amadi was born on 12 May 1934 and died on 29 June 2016(82years ) to Daniel Wonchukwu and Enwere( Wike) Amadi in Aluu, near Port- Harcourt, now the capital of River state, he was the son of Womuchukwu, a chief in the Ikwerre tribe. Elechi Amadi attended Government college Umahia for his secondary school education he proceeded to Survey School Oyo from 1953 to 1954 and The University Of Ibadan from 1955 to 1959 where he obtained a degree in Physics and Mathematics.

After his degree from the University of Ibadan, he worked as a Surveyor from1959 -to 1960, and as a Science teacher in Oba and Ahoada from 1960 to 1963, he served in the Nigerian army from 1963 to 1966, and upon his discharge from the army, he took a job as headmaster of Asa Grammar school from 1966 to 1967, after his discharge from Asa Grammar school he took the life of the author from 1966-1985.
In 1966 his first book” The Concubine was published, this book solidified his reputation as a writer, both in his country and abroad, half of million books were sold. During the Nigeria Civil War in 1967, Amadi’s writing career was disrupted. That year, an armed uprising and establishment of a receptionist. The government led by Nigeria’s popular ethnic group “Igbo” resulted in the breakaway nation of Biafra. Amadi was stranded, he rejoined the Nigerian Army and served in the Marine Commandos Unit, he remained there until the end of the War in 1970 when Biafra surrendered, he rose to the rank of Captain and later retired at the same rank.
After the War, he left the Nigerian army, he then held various position with River state Government, he worked as Permanent Secretary from 1973 to 1983, Commissioner for Education from 1987 to 1988 and Commissioner for Lands and Housing

Elechi amadi got married to Dorah Nwonne ohale, a midwife while still studying Physics and Mathematics, he later got married to two wives , he gave birth to 17 children , he was Disciplinarian, someone who loves culture and nature and someone who love children.
