Nina Hagen was born in East Berlin, East Germany, to screenwriter Hans Hagen (also known as Hans Oliva-Hagen) and actress and singer Eva-Maria Hagen (née Buchholz). Her father, Hans, survived the Holocaust after being imprisoned in a Moabit prison from 1941 to 1945, when he was liberated by the Soviet Army.
Hermann Carl Hagen, her Jewish paternal grandfather, was murdered on May 28, 1942, at the age of 56, at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp.
