Timothy’s father, Brando, was well-known for his turbulent personal life and numerous partners and children. He had at least eleven children, three of whom were adopted.
In his autobiography, Songs My Mother Taught Me, Timothy Gahan Brando’s father wrote that he met Marilyn Monroe unnoticed at a party where she played piano, that they had an affair and had an intermittent relationship for many years, and that he received a phone call from her several days before she died. He also claimed numerous other romances, though his autobiography did not discuss his marriages, wives, or children.
Timothy Gahan Brando’s stepbrother Christian Brando fatally shot Dag Drollet, the boyfriend of his half-sister Cheyenne, at his father’s Mulholland Drive home in the Hollywood Hills on May 16, 1990. The family drama and trial received a lot of attention that year. In 1991, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to prison.
In 1996, Timothy Gahan Brando’s brother was released. In 2004, evidence presented at Robert Blake’s trial for the 2001 murder of his wife, Bonnie Lee Bakley, revealed Christian’s relationship with Bakley and his possible involvement in her murder. Christian was sentenced to probation after pleading no contest to spousal abuse of his then-wife Deborah in 2005. He died of pneumonia on January 26, 2008, at the age of 49.
Gahan, Timothy Marlon Brando, Brando’s father, was known as a “bad boy” for his public outbursts and antics. “Brando was rock and roll before anybody knew what rock and roll was,” according to Los Angeles magazine. His actions during the filming of Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) appeared to strengthen his reputation as a difficult star. He was blamed for a change in director and an out-of-control budget, though he denied responsibility for both.
Marlon broke paparazzo Ron Galella’s jaw on June 12, 1973. Galella had followed Brando after a taping of The Dick Cavett Show in New York City, where he was accompanied by talk show host Dick Cavett. He paid a $40,000 out-of-court settlement and as a result developed an infected hand.
Marlon Gahan Brando, Timothy Gahan Brando’s father, died of respiratory failure from pulmonary fibrosis with congestive heart failure on July 1, 2004 at UCLA Medical Center.
His lawyer initially withheld the cause of death, citing privacy concerns. In addition, he had diabetes and liver cancer. Shortly before his death, despite needing an oxygen mask to breathe, he recorded his voice to reprise his role as Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather: The Game. However, due to his health, Marlon only recorded one line, and an impersonator was hired to finish his lines.
