Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, was born on July 11, 1995, in Lagos, Nigeria, to a Nigerian mother and a British father. Her father abandoned her mother when she was five years old, so she was raised by her single mother.
She attended Dowen College in Lekki after completing her primary education in Lagos. She later relocated to Johannesburg to pursue a degree in Economics at a South African university. Tems was raised in a simple family and discovered her musical talent after joining a local choir.

Tems’ musical career began at a young age, when her piano teacher taught her how to play. She liked Destiny Child’s ‘Solider’ featuring Lil Wayne. Her favorite artist was Beyoncé, and she aspired to be a music icon.
Her career as an alternative singer began when she was 20 years old. In 2013, she released her first EP, “Time Swap EP.” Her first recognized single, “Mr. Rebel,” a song with over 200,000 views on YouTube, followed her 2018 album “Illumination.” She followed it up with another single, “Looku Looku,” which was well received and received a lot of airplay on Nigerian radio stations.
