Chukwuka Ekweani (born 16 July 1995) is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and record producer who is signed to Warner Music South Africa and Atlantic Records. He was previously signed to Chocolate City, an independent label service of Warner Music Group.

Chocolate City released his international hit single “Love Nwantiti” (Ah Ah Ahh) in 2019. Following the debut of the Billboard Afrobeats chart on March 29, 2023, the song debuted at number one. It became the first African song in history to surpass one billion Spotify streams on May 9, 2023.

Ckay was signed to The Plug Entertainment by Asa Asika during the early peak of his global career as Ckay’s manager.

Early life.
Chukwuka Ekweani was born in Kaduna, a state in Nigeria’s northwestern region. He is of Anambra State Igbo descent. His father, who was a choir conductor at their local church, inspired his love of music.

He was moved by musical instruments as a child, prompting him to learn the piano from his father. Following that, he was introduced to the production software Fruity Loops by a friend.

Chukwuka began his music career as a member of a band with two other bandmates before embarking on his solo career as CKay.

Career

After being discovered, he relocated to Lagos in 2014. In early 2015, while signed to Loopy Music, he began working with Chocolate City.

On May 6, 2016, he released a promotional single titled “Bad Musician, Bad Producer,” with the instrumental being made available for free download across all Nigerian blogs for commercial use for covers, club, and airplay.

He officially joined the Chocolate City artist roster on August 31, 2016, following the merger of Loopy Music in 2016. On October 23, 2016, Kelly Joe’s cover of “Bad Musician, Bad Producer” was nominated by TNMA and earned CKay a special recognition. He released Who the Fuck Is CKay? – ep on September 11, 2017 via Chocolate City.

He released “Container” on March 2, 2018, an Afrobeat record influenced by the South African gwara gwara dance style. The song became a breakthrough hit in Nigeria, earning him a lot of airplay. Tempoe produced it and released it through Chocolate City.

On July 6, 2018, he released the music video, which was directed and shot by Myth.  On August 30, 2019, he released CKay the First, his second extended play, through Chocolate City.  The project produced the hit single “Love Nwantiti,” which became a major hit in Nigeria.

CKay released a remix titled “Love Nwantiti (Ah Ah Ah)” featuring Joeboy and Kuami Eugene on February 14, 2020. It went viral on TikTok in 2021 and became an international hit, charting across Europe, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as reaching number 23 in the UK and earning him his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.

In the Maghreb and Germany, a North African remix featuring ElGrande Toto became popular. A French remix included Franglish, a German remix included Frizzo, Joeboy, and Kuami Eugene, a Spanish remix included De La Ghetto, an East African remix included Rayvanny, and a South African remix included Tshego and Gemini Major.

On November 13, 2020, he performed “La La” from Davido’s studio album A Better Time, which was released by Davido Music Worldwide, RCA Records, and Sony Music.

He released his third ep Boyfriend through Warner Music South Africa on February 11, 2021. CKay tweeted on May 4, 2021, “I’m NOT signed to Chocolate City.” Warner Music South Africa has signed me.”  On July 28, 2021, he received a Silver Creator Award from YouTube for reaching 100,000 subscribers.

He made an appearance on the song “Beggie Beggie” from Ayra Starr’s debut studio album 19 & Dangerous, released by Mavin Records on August 6, 2021. Ckay became the first African artist to reach 20 million Spotify listeners on October 8, 2021, with over 21 million monthly listeners on his Spotify.
On Power 99.1 FM on November 3, 2021, he reviled his record deal with Atlantic. CKay released “Emiliana” and “By Your Side” featuring Blxckie on December 3, 2021.

Mosh directed the music video, which was released on April 1, 2023. Emiliana charted throughout Europe and Africa, reaching number 9 in France and earning him his first top 5 spot on the Nigeria Turntable Top 50 chart. Emiliana was certified platinum in France on May 26, 2023.

Starr’s “Beggie Beggie” earned him a special recognition at The Headies in the Best Collaboration category on May 24, 2023. On June 17, 2023, he released “Watawi,” which featured Davido, Focalistic, and Abidoza and peaked at number 13 on Nigeria’s TurnTable Top 50.

The song was accompanied by a music video directed by Dalia Dias. On June 20, 2023, CKay became the second African artist to reach 1.2 billion streams, but was surpassed by 200 million streams by Burna Boy, who now has 1.4 billion streams.
