Tems is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who was born on July 11, 1995 in Lagos. In 2009, she rose to become one of Nigeria’s young famous singers after growing up singing in her church choir. The success of her 2019 single Try Me catapulted her to prominence in the music industry. In addition, by releasing a song with American musician Khalid and Nigerian hip hop sensation Davido, she cemented her place in the hall of fame. Biography
Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, was born on July 11, 1995, in Lagos, Nigeria, to a Nigerian mother and a British father. Her father abandoned her mother when she was five years old, so she was raised by her single mother.

She attended Dowen College in Lekki after completing her primary education in Lagos. She later relocated to Johannesburg to pursue a degree in Economics at a South African university. Tems was raised in a simple family and discovered her musical talent after joining a local choir.


During her childhood, she took the first steps toward becoming a wonderful musician, recording songs with her school choir and practicing on her brother’s guitar. In an interview with MU Narratives, she described how her music teacher encouraged her to sing with her true voice when she doubted her ability.

Career
Tems’ musical career began at a young age, when her piano teacher taught her how to play. She liked Destiny Child’s ‘Solider’ featuring Lil Wayne. Her favorite artist was Beyoncé, and she aspired to be a music icon.


Her career as an alternative singer began when she was 20 years old. In 2013, she released her first EP, “Time Swap EP.” Her first recognized single, “Mr. Rebel,” a song with over 200,000 views on YouTube, followed her 2018 album “Illumination.” She followed it up with another single, “Looku Looku,” which was well received and received a lot of airplay on Nigerian radio stations. She followed up with another hit single, “Try me,” and cemented her place in music history. Tems’ Try Me was released in August 2019 and has received over 2 million views on YouTube alone.
