Sources for Trending News
Once, we relied solely on newspapers, television, and neighborhood rumors to learn about the most recent news trends. Newspapers are no longer the primary source of news-related information since the advent of the internet. Increasing numbers of people rely on the Internet to stay informed, turning to sites they already frequent frequently. Unbelievably, a multitude of platforms have emerged, each of which offers trending news in a variety of formats.
The majority of these sites present reports in a significantly different format than traditional sites, which have historically been very objective and direct. There are currently more opinion-oriented articles on news websites. Typically, they present the information in a way that is both informative and entertaining in order to compete with the numerous less formal platforms that provide entertaining and offbeat reporting. Facebook and Twitter are altering the manner in which we read the news. They facilitate the incorporation of information gathering into our daily lives.
Many of us check the news while browsing Facebook or Twitter, and we visit our friends’ profiles and statistics to learn the most recent news and gossip. Historically, our expectations for the veracity of news-related sources have been extremely high. Today, we have become desensitized to news from less credible sources, accepting claims without verification that the information is accurate. The most recent Twitter status update from a friend is now an acceptable source of trending news, and people are becoming much more vocal with their opinions.
In the past, if we had a complaint or opinion regarding something we read in the newspaper, we would file a complaint and hope it would be read or published. Today, however, it takes only the click of a button to create a viral statement based on something we’ve read or heard. Additionally, we have significantly more resources to verify what we have read in the newspaper or seen on television. We can view it not only from the “objective” standpoint of traditional news sources, but also from a standpoint of opinion. Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms make it easier for us to see what others are saying and provide us with diverse perspectives. Social networking sites effectively structure our communication, making our thoughts more organized. When we interact with our friends and share news via these innovative channels, even email seems obsolete.
