Folarin Falana (born October 27, 1990), better known by his stage name Falz, is a Nigerian rapper, songwriter, and actor who began his career in secondary school after forming a group called The School Boys with a friend before beginning his professional career as a music artist in 2009.
Falz rose to prominence after releasing the song “Marry Me,” which featured vocals from Poe and Yemi Alade.

He currently runs an independent record label called Bahd Guys Records.

In 2014, he released his debut album, Wazup Guy. His second album, Stories That Touch, was released in 2015. He released 27 in 2017, and Moral Instruction, his fourth studio album, in 2019.

Early life and education
Falz was born in the Lagos State local government area of Mushin to lawyers and human rights activists Funmi and Femi Falana.

After graduating from the Nigeria Law School in Abuja, he was admitted to the bar in 2012. [clarification required] Falz attended St. Leo’s Catholic Primary School in Ikeja and Olashore International School in Osun State for his primary and secondary education, respectively.
He is a law graduate of the University of Reading in England, where he earned an LLB honors degree.

Career
Falz began playing music as a hobby in secondary school. He and a friend formed “The School Boys,” a music group. Shakara: The Mixtape, a compilation of some of his recordings, was released in 2009 as a mixtape.

Falz debuted in the Nigerian music industry with the single “Wahz Up Guy” in 2011, followed by “High Class” and “Currency.”

Falz was named one of tooXclusive’s “Artists to Watch in 2014” on January 2, 2014.
Falz released his debut studio album, Wazup Guy, on May 30, 2014. The album featured productions from Studio Magic, DJ Woske, Tin Tin, and Spellz, among others.

Olamide, Show Dem Camp, Phenom, and Yemi Alade make appearances on Wazzup Guy’s 18 tracks. Some of the songs are “See Me,” “Toyin Tomato,” “Senator,” “Right Now,” “Jessica,” “High Class,” “Marry Me,” “Oh God,” “The Advice,” and “Cool Parry,” which has received critical acclaim.
Falz returned with an official single titled “Ello Bae” on January 31, 2015.

Actually, it was his first solo effort following the release of Wazzup Guy, and it earned him a number of awards. [Citation required] Falz was strategic in his music release, timing it just before the Valentine’s Day holiday.

Falz was nominated for “Best Collaboration of The Year” at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards for his chart-topping single “Marry Me” in 2015. At the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards, he was nominated for “Best Collaboration of the Year.” He was also nominated in the categories of “Best Rap Act of the Year” and “Best New Act to Watch.”

On January 31, 2015, he released a single titled “Ello Bae,” which earned him a nomination for “Best Street Hop Artiste of The Year” at the 2015 The Headies awards.

On November 3, 2015, he announced the release of his second studio album, Stories That Touch, on November 17, 2015.

Falz won the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards for “Best Actor in a Comedy Movie/Series” for his role as Segun in Funke Akindele’s TV series Jenifa’s Diary.

Falz won the “Viewer’s Choice Best New International Act” category at the 2016 BET Awards in June 2016.

On October 27, 2016, Falz and Simi released Chemistry, a seven-track EP produced entirely by Sess. Falz and Simi previously collaborated on the singles “Jamb Question” and “Soldier.”

To celebrate his 27th birthday, Falz released a new album titled 27 on October 27, 2017. This was a surprise album because it had not been promoted prior to its release. It featured 17 songs, including hit singles such as “Bhad Baddo Baddest,” “Wehdone Sir,” and “Something Light.” Davido, Olamide, Burna Boy, Wande Coal, Maleek Berry, Sir Dauda, Medikal, Terry Apala, and Ycee were among the performers.

The album was primarily produced by Sess as in-house producer, with assistance from Maleek Berry and Studio Magic on a few tracks. The album performed exceptionally well, earning several awards and nominations, including one for The Headies Award for Rap Album of the Year.

Falz released a music video titled “This Is Nigeria” in May 2018, which was inspired by Childish Gambino’s “This Is America.” It emphasized Nigerian issues such as corruption and bribery.

Months later, the NBC (National Broadcasting Commission) banned the song, claiming it was vulgar. When asked, Falz responded, “If they ban this song, I don’t understand them because that song is definitely not a vulgar song.” Falz, on the other hand, is suing NBC for N100 million.

On September 1, 2018, Falz won “Best Supporting Actor” at the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards for his role as Quam in Tope Oshin Ogun’s film New Money, becoming the first Nigerian musician to do so.

Falz unveiled his film production company, House21TV, in August 2020. While announcing the new film production company, Falz also took to Instagram to announce a brand new comedy series called Therapy, which will air exclusively on YouTube.

Falz announced on his Instagram page in March 2023 that he will be doing things a little differently this year, having deleted all of his posts from the previous year, assuring that it’s a new dispensation by dropping his first official single for the year with BNXN, also known as Buju, titled “Ice Cream.” He also purchased a van with a ticketing booth imprinted with Falz Ice Cream, with the intention of spreading love to people by providing free ice cream throughout Lagos.
